As you all know from my recent post about “Escaping to Relaxation” at Massage Heights (at the Iowa River Landing), I enjoy myself a good, relaxing day at the spa. And we were thrilled to give the same luxurious, relaxing experience to the winner of our Super Mom Contest in honor of Mother’s Day! (Oh, and we should mention that the gracious ladies at Massage Heights also offered a free 1 hour massage to our second runner up, as well!) But, that was May, and this is June. And June, as we know, is all about the dads.
For that reason, last weekend my husband Matt enjoyed his first ever massage. And let me tell you, it won’t be his last, that’s for sure! For someone who works 60+ hours/week driving a truck and hauling thousands of pounds of food into restaurants and nursing homes, my hubby deserved a little spoiling and a lot of good, hard back-rubbing. And that’s exactly what he got.
Matt enjoyed a 1 hour massage, plus a reviving foot scrub as well. Definitely a treat for him, but at the same time I think it really made us both step back and think about the benefits of continued therapeutic massage. After chatting with Angela (owner of Massage Heights), she filled us in on some of the amazing health and wellness benefits of massage therapy, which you can read more about (from the Mayo Clinic) by clicking here. Although many of us view a massage as a day of leisure and relaxation (which it IS), we should also be informed and be reminded that therapeutic massage can be an amazing treatment for headaches, anxiety, digestive disorders, insomnia, sports injuries, and more.
And speaking of sports injuries, Massage Heights offers a wonderful Sports Massage, which is perfect for all of those active dads in your lives. If your husbands (or dads or brothers or friends) are active in sports, I would highly recommend considering therapeutic massage as a treatment for any pain or injuries that result from their activities. Although my husband isn’t involved in any sports, his job is extremely demanding physically, and he was shocked at how much better he felt after just one massage treatment.
Angela also filled us in on AMAZING little tidbit that we just had to share with you today. Did you know that many times massage therapy may be covered by your health insurance? It’s true! The services of a licensed massage therapist are frequently covered by health insurance providers when prescribed by a chiropractor or an osteopath, a physician or a physical therapist. Many employers have recognized the health and wellness benefits of massage therapy, and allow employees to use their flex or health savings account dollars for this reason. If you are interested in understanding more about reimbursement on your therapeutic massage therapy, you should contact your human resources department or your health insurance company. {Mercy Medical Center and the University of Iowa both reimburse their employees for massage therapy services, just FYI}
