A Letter To My Son On Your First Day of Kindergarten

To my son, on your first day of kindergarten,

Today you will start a new phase in your academic journey.  Your book bag is ready, your supplies have been delivered, and your brand new lunch box is packed.  You are so excited, and I am excited for you.

I have no doubt this will be an exciting year.  Over the course of this year you will learn to read, write, add, and subtract. You will learn about history, geography, music, art, and physical fitness.  You will make friends, face challenges, and have so many new and wonderful experiences.

Some subjects that you encounter will excite you, and you will discover things that you can’t wait to learn more about.  Dive into your passions and uncover new worlds.

You will get assignments that don’t interest you, about things that don’t seem important.  Complete them anyway.  Do your best and sock the knowledge away for later, as knowledge is never wasted.

You will have teachers that inspire you, challenge you, and push you to achieve.  Thank them.

You will have teachers with whom you do not get along, who you feel are unfair, or who you do not understand.  Respect them, for they surely have lessons to teach you.

There will be kids who are faster than you.  Be challenged by them.

There will be kids who are smarter than you, and kids that are different from you.  Learn from them.

You will fall on the playground.  You will skin your knee and want to come home.  Take a deep breath and look for the adults who are there to help you.

You won’t always be the best, and things won’t always come easily.  Do your best in all things, so that you never have reason to look back and wonder, “What if?”

I can’t wait to see how you grow and change over this year.  I know that when I look back at the end of this school year you will be more than just a year older and an inch or two taller.  You will be transformed from the preschooler you were before, to a bonafide “big kid,” ready to take on the world.  I’ll admit, a part of me is a little sad that so much of your day will take place away from me, and that I will have a smaller part to play in your daily life from now on.  But I know that this rite of passage means you are growing up, and I am so excited to see what you will become.

As you walk the kindergarten halls this year, remember what you have learned so far: be kind, be polite, listen well.  Ask questions.  Be cautious, but be courageous.  Stand up for others, especially those who are weaker than you.  Let others stand up for you when you need it.  Run, play, fall, fail, and get a skinned knee or two.  Do new things. Do hard things.  Ask for help.  Give help to others.  And at the end of the year, we’ll look back and marvel at just how much you’ve grown.

Go out, and take on the world my son.

With all my love,

Mom
