When my husband and I bought our first house many years ago, I looked forward to having visitors. We finally had enough space for overnight guests, and we would clean the entire house, top to bottom, in anticipation of having people over for any length of time.
Back then we had time. Back then we had energy. Back then we had a desire to show people we were responsible adults that knew how to keep a house clean and tidy.
A lot changes when you have kids.
Fast forward to today, two kids later, a bigger house, an unseemly amount of toys, less energy, less time…you get the picture. Cleaning now gets put on the back burner for so many other things. Things that are way more important than cleaning, like making memories with our kids. Things quite a bit less important than cleaning, like relaxing in front of the TV at the end of a stressful day.
Cleaning just doesn’t make the cut as often as it used to. But there are still times when cleaning probably should be a priority, it’s just hard to get motivated to do it. So, I whipped up this handy dandy little flow chart to help us all answer that one question: should I clean before my guests come over or not?
So now you know.
