Your Next Date Night: Let Loose with Club Hancher

When you think of Hancher, do you think of the grandiose auditorium, the larger than life theater, the impressive stage and brimming audience? Our beloved Hancher does offer that type of incredible experience, but did you know that Hancher also offers intimate club-like performances?

Let me introduce you to Club Hancher.

Each year Hancher offers a delicate balance of unique performances, including a handful of artists that perform for a smaller crowd in the club-like setting of Straus Hall (within the beautiful new Hancher building). These performances feature table seating, the opportunity to preorder food, and tableside beverage service during the show! It’s a completely different experience than attending a performance in the Auditorium. Club Hancher brings you up close to exceptional artists performing in a variety of styles.

Spring 2019 will feature two fantastic Club Hancher performances:

Banda Magda, Saturday February 2, 2019, 6:30 and 9:00 p.m.

(An eclectic global sound with musicians from around the globe. The group performs songs in six different languages!)

Kaia Kater, Saturday March 30, 2019, 6:30 and 9:00 p.m.

(A folk singer with amazing banjo skills and a jazz inflected voice who brings a deep level of authenticity to her music.)

Because Club Hancher is offered in the more intimate Strauss Hall space, they offer two shows–one early and one late. Although it’s been awhile since this mama attended a show that STARTS at 9:00 p.m., I am definitely intrigued by the insider tip we received. Apparently the 9:00 p.m. late show is when the artists really let loose. Knowing this, it would definitely be a fun time slot to snag tickets for!

Seating, Tickets, and Food

Seating for Club Hancher is at small, more intimate tables. To me, this sounds like the perfect reason to cozy up to my husband. In terms of food, ordering food ahead is the way to go! University Catering offers a delicious assortment of items to enjoy during Club Hancher. When you secure your tickets to the show, just hop onto this website by 12 p.m. the day prior to your event. Then, the day of the show, arrive 30 minutes before the Club Hancher concert to pick up your food.

Another insider tip: The pre-order website is closed for orders until about a month before each performance. If you have tickets to Banda Magda you can check out the pre-order website after January 2nd, 2019. If you have tickets for Kaia Kater, the pre-order website will go live after February 2nd, 2019.

The food available has my mouth watering. The menu includes items like a Charcuterie Platter or the Thai Chicken Salad, and prices range from $14-$17. You can expect menu changes a few times a year, as the chefs work to design offerings in line with the current season. I am looking forward to seeing what fresh springtime entrees they have.

Offering dinner and a show in a gorgeous setting like Hancher is the perfect recipe for a memorable date night.

I’m already scheming up who might babysit so we can attend Kaia Kater on March 30th! Don’t miss out on a spring 2019 Club Hancher performance. Hop onto the Hancher website today and grab those tickets now! Maybe I’ll see you there!

Linda is a Michigan native who moved to Iowa City in 2011 and hasn’t left yet. She and her husband of twelve years, Jacob, have two spunky kids – a kindergartner and a third grader. Linda works full time at the University of Iowa as the Administrative Director for the Medical Scientist Training Program. Together, Linda and her family enjoy cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers (shhhh!), going on adventures both big and small, and playing board games (they have over 100 and will play with anyone they can talk into it). Linda is often told she has two volumes: on and off, and she will enthusiastically respond to any news you tell her. No matter the volume she uses, Linda is an “old soul” with a love for baking, embroidery, and old movies.
