Where to Buy a Live Christmas Tree Near Iowa City

One of my favorite Christmas songs that I love playing in the background while decorating our Christmas tree is the old time favorite, O Tannenbaum. We play both the German and English version on repeat while we decorate. The sweetest sounds I enjoy hearing every year are when my kids are singing along to the songs while sorting through ornaments.

“O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
How lovely are your branches!
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
How lovely are your branches!
Not only green in summer’s heat,
But also winter’s snow and sleet.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How lovely are your branches!”

Over the years, we have used both artificial and real Christmas trees for our holiday seasons. However, there is just something so unique and nostalgic about going to a tree farm and choosing the perfect pyramidal (my preference) shape evergreen tree to cut down. The sound of the saw cutting through the bark and seeing the anticipation on our children’s faces as they wait for the tree to fall–it’s pure holiday magic.

Finding our “perfect” tree for the first time wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I was unaware of the numerous types of trees available and the characteristics of them. For example, you must take into consideration the weight of your ornaments because certain trees have a less sturdy branch. There’s also the question of how fragrant of a tree you want, type of needle preference, sunlight, watering needs, etc. Below, you will find a few tips that I have learned about fresh cut Christmas trees and where you can purchase them in the Iowa City area.

“After all, it is the holidays, and you can never have too many Christmas trees”—so my kids say.

Caring for Your Fresh Cut Tree

1. Re-cut the trunk at least 1 inch from the bottom before placing it in the stand. If the fresh cut is exposed too long, it will seal up by the tree’s sap.
2. Avoid placing tree in direct sunlight or near any heat sources such as fireplaces, televisions, computer monitors, etc. Doing so will cause the tree to dry out and shed needles, as well as being a potential fire hazard!
3. Make sure tree stand is filled with at least 1 gallon of clean warm water. Check the water level every day. Some Christmas trees can absorb up to 2 gallons of water in a day. Do not let water level get below the fresh cut stem.
4. To ensure that the tree is adequately retaining water, do not add anything to the fresh sink water. This may lessen water retention and as a result, cause rapid shedding of needles.

  1. Also the Optimist Club sells trees at the Riverside Drive Dairy Queen lot! Different varieties and sizes available. I believe it’s cash or check.
