30 Things You Know You’ve Said About Iowa Winter

It’s February and we are in the depths of Iowa winter. When you choose to live in the Midwest you sign up for a roller-coaster of winter weather, for better or for worse. As a lifelong Midwesterner I can relate to all 30 of these phrases, even if they make me giggle at how ridiculous some of them sound.

Laugh with me, and then scroll down for some additional resources to help get us through the next month (or two . . .).

30 Things You Know You've Said About Iowa Winter

It wouldn’t be that cold if it weren’t for the wind.

If it’s going to be cold it might as well snow.

I’d much rather it snow than this ice.

Did you hear it’s going to be super nice this weekend? High of 36!

I have four-wheel drive, so this snow/ice isn’t a problem for me.

Omg why didn’t they cancel school?!

Does anyone know how the roads are today?

This is nothing compared to the polar vortex!

Can you believe this weather?

Do you have your snow pants, snow boots, hat, and gloves?

When are they going to put salt on these roads?

It took me over an hour to shovel my driveway!

Do you think I need to shovel the sidewalk? Ope. Neighbors are out doing theirs. Now we have to.

Omg why did they cancel school!?

At least the sun is shining.

It smells like it is going to snow.

I don’t need a coat. It’s like 38 degrees out and I’m just walking from the car into the grocery store!

The air hurts my face.

Zip up that coat right now!

Why do we live here?

I heard they got 12 inches of snow north of us. We were lucky. It just missed us.

Who tracked their snowy and muddy boots through this kitchen?

I just need to run to the store to grab some bread and milk.

Do not throw snow at your brother/sister!

They’re getting weather west of us. We’re next!

I’m not worried about my own driving in this stuff, I’m worried about the OTHER drivers.

At least the snow is pretty!

Close the door! We aren’t heating the outside!

It doesn’t look as cold as it is.

That’s Iowa for you!

How are you coping with Iowa winter?

Linda
Linda is a Michigan native who moved to Iowa City in 2011 and hasn’t left yet. She and her husband of twelve years, Jacob, have two spunky kids – a kindergartner and a third grader. Linda works full time at the University of Iowa as the Administrative Director for the Medical Scientist Training Program. Together, Linda and her family enjoy cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers (shhhh!), going on adventures both big and small, and playing board games (they have over 100 and will play with anyone they can talk into it). Linda is often told she has two volumes: on and off, and she will enthusiastically respond to any news you tell her. No matter the volume she uses, Linda is an “old soul” with a love for baking, embroidery, and old movies.
