February is Black History Month. Several Iowa City based organizations and institutions are offering events, screenings, and series to educate the community about the important history of Black Americans.

Black History Themed Library Kits
The North Liberty Public Library is offering activity kits that highlight the life and work of Black artist Alma Thomas.

Who Was? – A Story Time For Children
Each Month the African American Museum of Iowa explores the story of a different African American or group of African Americans and their achievements.
Date: Feb. 13, 2021

Black History Month Mini-Storytime
These Iowa City Public Library storytimes will focus on stories of achievements, perseverance, courage and talent that make up history of African Americans.

Play & Learn with the African American Museum of Iowa
While all Iowa Children’s Museum exhibits will be open, this special Black History themed play session will be centered around traveling exhibits provided by the African-American Museum of Iowa.
Date: Feb. 17, 2021
Time: 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Black Athletes Then and Now: Jackie Robinson Movie Discussion and UI Athletic Sports Panel
Watch the film at your leisure and join the a discussion. Registration for the discussion is required. A panel of athletes from the University of Iowa will share their experiences and answer your questions. Registrants who attend this program will also be eligible for a 10-punch swim pass through Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department.

Totally Tweens: Alma Thomas Color Field Painting
Those who register for this ICPL program will receive supplies so that they may create a painting of their own in the style of Alma Thomas’ best known works.
