What: Afro-Cuban Dance Workshop
Where: Iowa City Public Library
When: Feb. 2, 2022, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Enjoy a special Afro-Cuban dance workshop with Modei Akyea! While learning the dances, gain knowledge of the background and history of the movements.

What: Celebrating Black History Month at the Museum
Where: African American Museum of Iowa
When: Feb. 5 & 17, 2022, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Celebrate Black History Month with the African American Museum of Iowa! Its galleries will be open with free admission on  Saturday, February 5 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Thursday, February 17 with extended hours from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Families will enjoy a free book, snack, activity sheets, and a traveling exhibit.

When: Feb. 9, 2022, 6-8 p.m.

Test your knowledge of the achievements, historic moments, and pop culture in African-American history. The event is free and open to the public and is presented by the City of Iowa City’s Parks and Recreation and Human Rights divisions.

What: The African American Museum of Iowa: Superheroes of Science 
Where: Iowa City Public Library
When: Feb. 16, 2022, 4-5 p.m.

Join the African American Museum of Iowa at the library for an afterschool program for kids in preschool through second grade. Learn about four African American scientists who made life better for everyone, and then create a hero’s cape that shows your superpower.

What: Preschool Stories & More: Black History Month Storytime and Short Film Fest

Feb. 17, 2022, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

This storytime for kids and families features stories about Black culture and history with books that celebrate key African American figures. Celebrate the significant impact Black musicians have played on music as well. Stick around after storytime for some animated picture books shorts.
