Simple Southern Fried Cabbage/Asparagus Recipe

Southern fried cabbage/asparagus is a simple, delicious, and addictive side dish! As a mama of three littles, it’s difficult to find foods we can all agree on, but this is one of those dishes that even my pickiest eater will consume with delight! Sometimes substituting cabbage for asparagus, with the same delicious results! A parenting win!


Southern Fried Cabbage/Asparagus Recipe

Serves: 4-6      
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 head cabbage or 1 bundle of asparagus 
  • 1/4 cup vegetable or olive oil 
  • 2-3 strips of bacon
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder 
  • 1 tsp salt 
  • 1 tsp pepper 
  • 1/2 tsp white sugar 

Directions

Step 1

Cut strips of bacon into very small pieces. (I prefer to use kitchen shears.) Place into a large sauce on medium heat. Cover and cook for 5-7 minutes. Stir periodically.

Step 2

While the bacon is cooking, cut the cabbage into strips. Place cabbage and vegetable oil into sauce pan. Cover and allow the cabbage to cook down, about 10 minutes. Once it cooks down, being to stir periodically and add any remaining cabbage. (For Asparagus, cut into 1/2 inch pieces. Stir periodically).

Step 3

Add garlic powder, salt, pepper, and white sugar. Cover and cook an additional 10 minutes or until cabbage is tender. Stirring periodically.
