Summer has arrived! And while it’s all fun and games for the kids, let’s face it: the “summer slide” is a REAL THING. Many kids fall back in big ways over the summer months, and as parents we are looking for anything and everything to help avoid that, or at least to minimize it. If you, too, are looking for some extra help this summer and/or if you’d like to get a head start on the Fall semester, this is the guide for you!
Special thanks to our friends at Mathnasium for helping to make this guide possible. For more information on all of their tutoring and homework help options, see below.
Mathnasium
Monday-Thursday 3:30-7:30PM, Saturday 10:00AM-2:00PM
Mathnasium creates a personalized math learning path for each individual, from early childhood all the way through high school. Their math tutoring program will give your child the motivation and tools to thrive at their current grade level and reach for higher goals, they provide test-prep help to high school students through math knowledge, not test tricks, and the Mathnasium customized math learning plan will catch your child up to where they should be and help them reach their true potential. Head on over to their website to schedule a free assessment and to learn more about all of the different programs they have available this summer.
Free Tutoring at the Iowa City Public Library for K-6 Students
Mondays and Wednesdays, 4-6 p.m. in the Children’s Room
No registration required; just drop in for a 20-minute session (can stay longer if no one else is waiting) with a preservice teacher from the University of Iowa Elementary Education program. These soon-to-be teachers know the “new math” and are waiting to help your child so you don’t have to! Have your child bring homework. Another option is for your child to grab a book and practice reading aloud with the tutor — research shows reading practice outside of school is beneficial for developing reading skills.
Sylvan Learning
Monday-Thursday 9AM-6:30PM Saturday 8AM-12PM Sunday 1PM-3PM
At Sylvan, your child will experience significant skill growth in school. They have perfected a highly personal approach, tailoring lessons to your child’s specific needs, from math, reading and writing to homework and study skills support to test prep. Whether your child needs to master foundational skills or learn advanced concepts, Sylvan provides the supplemental support that leads to greater learning. And, you’ll see this impact not only in school, but in all areas of life.
