Summer Safety Must-Haves: From Bugs to Burns

Did you know there is a hidden gem within the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics? On level 1 of the Children’s Hospital is the UI Safety Store and let me tell you, they should be on your list of places to hit up in this season of outdoor trips, camps and hiking!

They have just about any product you will need to keep your family safe from seasonal hazards like sunburns and tick bites and an expert team to help you get exactly what you need.  And if you enjoy the online shopping + the drive up experience you can even order online and get curbside pick-up from the UI Safety store too! They do offer complimentary 30 minute parking (which we know is a luxury sometimes in Iowa City) so it’s easy to run in and explore the store!

Here’s some must-have items from the UI Safety Store that I’m packing as my kids gets ready to head outside for camp or before my family hops on a friend’s boat:

  • Bug Soother aka the perfume of summer! (BTW did you know there is a Bug Soother MAX and candles, all of which are available at the UI Safety Store… plus we love an Iowa-grown company!)
  • Super Goop Sunscreen
  • UV apparel and towels – the Luvbug towels they carry are so stinkin’ cute and they are quick dry and sand free! That means you can take them to the beach, stay protected from the sun AND not fill your washing machine with sand. Win Win WIN!
  • Life jackets – all sizes and varieties.
  • Sunglasses – They carry the Real Shades and ro-sham-bo brands. They even have the Tron looking glasses that all the sporty kids are begging for at a lower price than you’ll find almost anywhere! Your child and your wallet will be happy!
  • Boo Boo Pals – these are the most adorable first aid kits for kids! They come in different sports and animal designs. At $20 a kit these are perfect for the injury prone people in our lives.  I envision them as a back-to-school accessory on every backpack!

Information about Tick BitesThe ticks have been WILD this season, apparently due to the warm + wet weather in Iowa this summer, so it’s extra important to protect yourself and your children from ticks.  We’ve had a few too many tick and mosquito bites at our house so I was super excited to learn about these new products at the Safety Store:

  • Tickless Active – this device is chemical free and eco friendly.  You can put it on yourself, kids, and even pets!
  • The Nat Patch – a mosquito repellent patch you can stick on yourself or your kids. A tick repellant patch is coming soon to the store too!
