Throughout the pandemic, I’ve been looking for ways to enjoy my favorite restaurant meals at home. Sometimes that means take out and supporting our local businesses, and sometimes that means making my own delicious restaurant inspired budget-friendly meals at home.
This General Tso’s chicken recipe makes me feel like I ordered take-out or visited one of my favorite restaurants — all without actually leaving my house. Hope you enjoy it!

Ingredients
Chicken & Coating Ingredients
- 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp corn starch
- 1/2 Tbsp salt
- 1/2 tsp Pepper
- 1.5 - 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts Note: Thighs hold up better as leftovers
Sauce Ingredients
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp Pepper
- 1/4 cup + 1 Tbsp honey
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2-3 Tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 Tbsp sriracha
- 1 Tbsp tomato paste Note: 1/2 Tbsp if you are using concentrated tomato paste from a tube
- 1 tsp fresh grated or minced ginger
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
- 3 Tbsp water

Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the chicken
- Cut chicken into 1 inch bite size pieces.
- Whisk corn starch, 1/2 Tbsp salt, and 1/2 tsp pepper in a large bowl.
- Add chicken to cornstarch mixture and toss to coat.
Step 2: Prepare the Sauce
- Spray a medium size mixing bowl with Pam or other cooking spray.
- Mix together all sauce ingredients until combined.
- Set aside.
Step 3: Cook & Serve
- Heat 3 Tbsp to 1/4 cup of vegetable oil in a large skillet.
- Cook chicken on high/medium high until almost cooked through.
- Remove chicken to a plate and add sauce to skillet.
- Cook sauce about 2 minutes until thickened and reduced.
- Return chicken to pan. Toss to coat in sauce and cook 1 minute more until cooked through.
- Add sliced green onions.
- Serve over rice.

This is a simplified and modified to be extra-delicious version of Epicurious's General Tso's Chicken.
