Why I Will Absolutely Spend $70 a Year on Disney+

In case you somehow missed it, we have another streaming service to add to our menu of binging options. Disney unveiled its new platform Disney+, which allows us fingertip access to hundreds of big-name movies and shows from Disney animated classics, to  Marvel superhero adventures, to Star Wars stories from a galaxy far, far away.

A funny meme showed up on my feed the day Disney+ was unveiled, basically saying that all the streaming services of the world–Netflix, Amazon, Hulu…etc.–needed to consolidate so we aren’t paying for these individually. Wouldn’t that be nice? But, um, this is totally happening by design, and as much as I hate how much we are spending on these services, I am hands down willing to pay for Disney+. This is why:

Disney PlusThe Vault is Open

I grew up in era of marketing where Disney was constantly telling us that a favorite movie was “going back in the Disney vault.” AKA hurry up and get your hands on this movie as you only have a limited time before it’s off the shelves again! This marketing is somehow still working! I feel giddy that the vault is indefinitely unlocked … for as long as I’m willing to fork over that $6.99 monthly fee.

Additionally, and most importantly, these classic motion pictures that I grew up enjoying with my parents and grandparents are now available for me to share with our 3-year-old daughter, whenever and wherever we want.

The Nostalgia

Access to Disney Channel Original movies has my tween heart singing. I remember watching Brink!, Smart House, Zenon Girl of the 21st Century, and so many more live on Disney Channel during my formative years. I cannot wait to dive into some of these over the next few months, and re-watch them with my own daughter as she ages into them. Though my husband has reminded me – I will probably remember them being much better back then than they are now as an adult.

I refuse to believe that.

FOMO Factor

Obviously, there is a fear of missing out (FOMO) component to this. With new movies and shows like a live-action Lady and the Tramp (watched it already!), The Mandalorian, and High School Musical The Series, these are movies and shows that are exclusive to the Disney+ platform, and I don’t want to miss them!

Even the dog is enjoying watching the new Disney+ app.

While this does feel a bit overindulgent, I will enjoy it for now, because at some point if this media model continues as it has, we are going to have to decide which steaming services to keep, and ultimately which ones to cut. For now, this one is in the keep column.
