Free Family Fun at Hoover’s Hometown Days

It’s time to gather the kids for a day of good ol’ fashioned family fun this Saturday! Hoover’s Hometown Days is an annual festival for residents and visitors that combines a variety of activities recognizing the unique heritage of West Branch, Iowa, hometown of 31st U.S. President Herbert Hoover, while supporting and celebrating the thriving and charming small-town community. West Branch is just 6 miles east of Iowa City on I-80 and Hoover’s Hometown Days includes something for everyone on August 5-6, 2022! Find a full schedule of events at hooverdays.org or visit the Hoover’s Hometown Days page on Facebook for details about each activity. As a local mom and West Branch resident I’m here to provide some tips on how to navigate all the family fun during Hoover’s Hometown Days
The festival kicks off on Friday evening (August 5, 2022) with the Youth Hoover-Ball Tournament, a free Kids’ Tractor Pull and a night of fun including a double-elimination bags tournament and live music in the beer tent at the Fire Station.  This year the Friday night show will feature the Trophy Dads, if you haven’t been privy to a performance by these area dads I promise that you will enjoy it! Although it’s a “beer tent” this is a very family-friendly atmosphere and all ages are welcome to attend.  There is no cover and the music starts at 8pm.

Saturday, August 6th is the full day of family fun so make your plans to visit West Branch then.  I recommend that you start the day with the Mayor’s Parade at 10:00am and stick around to enjoy all the FREE bounce houses, inflatable games, giant bubble stations and a balloon artist that start immediately after the parade in Village Green.

Walk down the historic Main Street lined with food trucks, pop-up shops and unique vendors and enjoy a pony ride or visit the caricature artist and strolling magician. Stop for lunch and listen to live music in Heritage Square before you shop around at the charming small businesses (they even have a free bag-check so you don’t have to carry around your purchases while you enjoy the festival! Talk about a #momwin).

At some point you’ll want to cool off and the local ice cream shop or shaved ice truck are the perfect treat to tie you over as you stroll down and enjoy free entry into the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library & Museum! You can even snag a free birthday cupcake on your way out to celebrate Herb’s birthday and learn from the exhibitors and historical reenactments in the National Park.  If that’s not your thing, head down to watch the Hoover-Ball National Championships!
PSA for Parents: There’s excellent coffee and numerous beer gardens available too!
If your kids are like mine, you’ll want to revisit the inflatables again to fully soak up that excitement! Plus, they will love to participate in water ball fights, play some Bingo and get their face painted.
The bulk of the kid-focused activities wrap up at 5pm on Saturday but don’t retreat too soon! There are numerous options to enjoy dinner at a local restaurant or support the volunteer firefighters by having dinner at the station! Last but certainly not least, stick around for Live Music at 8pm and an awesome Fireworks show at dusk.  If you’re coming from out of town, Cubby Park (310 Scott Dr) is a great spot to watch the fireworks at night!

You can count on lots of family fun and plenty to Eat, Shop and Explore at Exit 254 in West Branch. Find a full schedule of events at hooverdays.org.
