My Secret Crush

For the past month we have spent almost every day together. Some of those days we spent too many hours to count together. You were there for me. You were dependable and strong. You protected my children and gave them things they didn’t know they were missing. You are beautiful on the outside and intelligent to boot.

My CrushNow before you all start getting worried and call Cody telling him to be worried, I should clarify that my crush is on a minivan. This may sound odd to some, but I always told myself that I would not drive a minivan. They just had a stigma to me, and looking back I could not tell you why. I know I’m not the only person with this thought. Go watch the movie “Cars,” and Lightning McQueen will let you know how he feels about minivans when one passes him on the highway, making a very interesting sound.

My Crush 5This summer my kids and I drove across the country and back. Because of how long the drive was, my mom decided that it would be more convenient for us to rent a minivan for the drive, plus then I didn’t have to put the miles on my car. The first day I spent trying to get used to driving “the bus”. But then it happened: the car started to grow on me.

My Crush 2First it was just so neat, all the bells and whistles that this car had that my car didn’t. It had the fancy touch screen radio, back up camera, built in sunshades for my kids, and a USB port for my phone. I had way too much fun pushing buttons and switching between the satellite radio and the playlist on my iPhone. Not to mention the hands-free calling feature so that my kids could hear their dad’s voice when he called to check in.

Then it was the convenience factor that started growing on me. My kids all had tons of leg room, I had enough storage for all of the junk you have to bring when traveling for a month with four kids, I could park anywhere and I didn’t have to worry about my kids accidentally dinging peoples doors when they got out, and to close the car door all I had to do was push a button. I could even open the car doors as I was walking up to the car without letting go of my toddler’s hand!

My Crush 3Now don’t get me wrong. I’m in no way ready to give up my SUV any time soon. At the same time, I may be softening towards the idea of a minivan (Don’t tell Cody, he’s been trying to get me in one since we started having kids). All things considered, this car was pretty impressive. It handled going up the hills on our drive like a champ, almost as good as my SUV, and the gas mileage was great. It had enough room for my kids, way more room than they are used to having, and even more room for all the stuff that comes with them. It even almost looked sporty. OK, that may be stretching it, but I did say ‘almost.’ I guess what I learned on my trip is that, Minivan Mamas – I get it. I totally understand why you love your cars now.

What kind of car do you drive? Are you on the minivan bandwagon?

  1. I had the same revelation when forced to rent a minivan when our Crossover SUV was in the shop after I got rear-ended. We had the minivan for a long weekend, and it was the easiest, most fun driving weekend ever! I’ve been dreaming of buying one ever since, oh how I long for push button door closure, or pull up screens on the back doors that block some of the sun from my super sensitive boy’s eyes. Some day, Minivan. Some day, we will meet again.

  2. I’ve wanted a minivan since I was a kid! We have a daughter and we don’t really need it, but I still absolutely love ours! My husband surprised me with one for our 10th wedding anniversary and it was even better than I ever imagined!
