Are you a Pinterest junkie like I am?! Lately I’ve been seeing bunches of darling Easter crafts in my Pinterest feed. Let me walk you through a few simple bunny crafts you can do with your children as we approach the holiday! These are easily adapted for kids as young as two or three on up through elementary school, with you providing age-appropriate help. You may already have some of these supplies on hand, and many of the rest can be picked up at a dollar store so you don’t have to make a big financial commitment!
Bunny Mask (age 2+)
Supplies
(All of these things can be found at the dollar store!)
- White paper plates (we used standard sized plates, but you can use cocktail plates for younger children)
- Cotton balls
- Large colored pom-pom (You can get these in a bag of mixed sizes if you plan to do other crafts with them!)
- Pipe cleaners
- Coffee stirrers (optional)
- Craft stick/popsicle stick
- Crayons/markers
- Scissors
- Glue (Hot glue gun or white glue probably work best, at least for the mouth and whiskers. A glue stick can be used by younger kiddos, but you may want to reinforce it later with a stronger adhesive.)
Instructions:
- Cut almond-shaped eyes in the paper plate
- Cut “ears” out of another paper plate and color or decorate; glue ears on to the back side of the bunny’s head
- Glue a pom-pom on as a nose
- Fashion a pipe cleaner for the mouth and glue it on
- Glue coffee stirrers or pipe cleaners in place as whiskers
- Optional: Out of the ridged edge on the plate from which you cut the ears, you can make bunny teeth and glue them on!
- Glue a craft stick on the back as a handle for your bunny mask. Alternatively, you could punch holes in the sides and thread yarn or string through them to tie the mask on.
Bunny Puppet (age 2+)
Supplies:
- Brown paper bag
- Cardstock or paper
- Crayons/markers
- Cotton ball
- Scissors
- Glue
Instructions:
- Cut ears, eyes, mouth, nose, arms, bowtie, etc. out of paper or cardstock (cardstock or construction paper will “stand up” better than thinner papers). If you need some help, I found this template you can use. You may need to set up a free account in order to download the template.
- Color the bunny parts.
- Glue parts onto the paper bag, using the fold for the mouth.
- Glue a cotton ball on the back as the tail.
Marshmallow Bunny Face (age 2+)
Supplies:
- Construction paper or cardstock
- Mini marshmallows
- Pipe cleaners or coffee stirrers
- Colored pom-poms
- Googly eyes (optional)
- Markers/crayons
- Glue
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Draw a bunny outline or cut out bunny template (many can be found online!) and trace around it on the construction paper.
- Glue mini marshmallows along the outline of your bunny.
- Draw eyes.
- Glue on pom-poms for a nose and mouth and in the ears, if you choose.
- Glue on googly eyes or pom-poms in the eyes you’ve drawn.
- For whiskers, glue on pipe cleaners (or trimmed down coffee stirrers).
Washi Tape Bunny Canvas (age 4+)
Supplies:
- Canvas (we used 9×12 canvases which I got on sale at Michael’s)
- Variety of washi tape (This paper tape can be found at a craft store or, in limited patterns, at the Dollar Tree.)
- White paper or cardstock
- Pencil/marker
- Scissors
- Craft knife or utility knife
- Glue (We used clear craft glue, but any glue could be used as long as it dries clear. A glue stick would work here, too.)
- Toothpicks or cotton swabs
- Stickers, googly eyes, cotton ball (optional)
Instructions:
- Find a bunny silhouette online and cut out inside of bunny template with scissors. Remember, you’ll be using the outline, so I would cut outside the black printed line so it is cut off with the inner bunny shape. Save the bunny cutout.
- Use washi tape (a less-desirable color/pattern that you won’t mind “wasting”) to secure bunny outline onto your canvas.
- Choose coordinating washi tapes in varying widths. (My son l-o-v-e-d going through my stash and choosing his tapes!)
- Lay tape horizontally across the bunny opening, overlapping onto the paper by about an inch on each side
- Continue sticking washi tape on the canvas. You can lay the washi right next to the previous color, or you can leave some white space if you choose.
- Gently press washi tape onto canvas with your hands.
- Use craft or utility knife to carefully cut around the bunny just inside the paper opening. I found it useful to lay the inner bunny shape I’d cut out on top of the washi and use it as a guide. Be careful not to press too hard with the craft knife as it will go through the canvas, and try not to tear the washi tape.
- Remove the washi tape from around the bunny template and carefully lift the paper off the canvas. Your washi tape bunny should remain! You may find spots that your craft knife didn’t quite cut through, so lift the paper slowly so you can cut any areas that are hanging on.
- I thought we were done at this point, but the washi tape didn’t all stay adhered to the canvas. (You can see this in the bottom center picture.) We improvised and glued the edges of the washi tape to the canvas so they wouldn’t lift or curl. I used clear glue and applied it using toothpicks. You may have a better idea, but this worked for us!
- Decorate canvas white space with stickers as desired. Jacob wanted his name, although I thought, “Hoppy Easter,” would have been cute! You may also want to add googly eyes and/or a cotton ball tail.
- Display your canvas proudly!
Ninja Turtle Easter Eggs (age 3+)
Supplies:
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Egg dye or food coloring
- Thin ribbon in red, blue, orange, and purple
- Small googly eyes
- Scissors
- Glue
Instructions:
- Hard boil your eggs and let them cool.
- Dye them green with egg dye or food coloring. You’ll probably want to use a lot of dye and let them soak quite a while to get a darker green color.
- Once the eggs dry, measure and cut ribbon pieces so they fit around each egg.
- Glue one end of the ribbon to the egg and wrap it around until the ends overlap, gluing a few places around the egg or even the whole length of the ribbon.
- Glue googly eyes onto the ribbon, opposite of where the ribbon ends overlap.
- Store in refrigerator until your egg hunt!
Twinkie Bunny Cars (age 2+)
Supplies:
- Twinkies
- Peeps bunnies
- Pretzel twists
- Large marshmallows
- M&Ms
- White frosting
Instructions:
- Unwrap Twinkies and cut a slit about 3/4 of the way from what will be the front of the car.
- Set a Peep bunny in the slit in the Twinkie.
- Push a pretzel twist into the Twinkie in front of the bunny for the steering wheel.
- Slice large marshmallows in half and place 4 halves as the wheels of the car. They may stick since the inside of the marshmallow is sticky, but you may need a little white frosting to stick them on.
- Using a little white frosting where you want to place them, stick M&Ms on to decorate the centers of each wheel, the hood of the car, or wherever your creativity wants to put them!
Bunny Cake (age 2+)
Supplies:
- Your favorite cake mix
- White frosting
- Food coloring (we used red, blue, and green)
- Cake decorating bags and tips (Alternatively you can put frosting in a Ziploc bag and cut one corner off to use to apply frosting)
- Candy for decoration (We used chocolate licorice for the bunny whiskers and candy malted eggs for the eyes and around the bunny.)
Instructions:
- Bake your cake according to the instructions in two 8- or 9-inch round pans. Let cool.
- Leave one round cake intact, and cut the other one according to this pattern. The center will be the bow tie, while the cutout portions will be the bunny ears.
- On a baking sheet (we lined it with wax paper, or you could use parchment paper) arrange the bunny cake’s head, ears, and bow tie.
- Frost the entire cake with white frosting.
- We made pink frosting for the nose/mouth and the ears, and we made blue and green frosting for the bow tie. Use whatever colors you like best! We aren’t a coconut family, but some people like to use colored coconut for the ears, bow tie, and/or grass around the bunny.
- Using your decorator bag or Ziploc, make the mouth/nose and ears. Apply frosting on the bow tie in small dots/stars. (If that’s too much work, just frost as you normally would a cake – it will be cute no matter what!)
- Finish decorating your bunny cake with candy.
