Saturday ,December 19th
Music is the Word 10:30am. Professional marimba player and organizer of the Heartland Marimba Festival, Matthew Coley, will be leading a special family storytime. Outlining the history of the marimba, he will be performing music from different cultures and ages. An additional performance will be held from 1-2pm. This event is taking place at the Iowa City Public Library and is free.
Frozen Play date 12:30-2pm. Join the National Dance Academy for a Frozen Play Date complete with dancing, fun and games, face painting, snacks and refreshments and a visit from Anna and Elsa! Cost is $6 and all ages are welcome.
Winter Solistice Festival of Light 3-5pm. Iowa City parks and recreation staff will host the Winter Solstice Festival of Light on Saturday, December 19th. The festival, to be held at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center on Gilbert Street, will offer crafts, hot cider and luminaries to attendees. The event is in celebration of the shortest day and longest night of the calendar year, and will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. The Yahoo Drummers are set to perform the opening and closing ceremonial bell ringing and drumming. The Winter Solstice Festival of Light is open to the public and is free of charge. Annual Toy Exchange 3-5pm. Save money and the environment this holiday season! We all have toys and books that are in great shape and our kids just aren’t interested in any longer. Bring the items to the toy exchange and find something new without spending money! All extras at the end of the day go to the domestic violence shelter in Iowa City.
Sunday, December 20th
Iowa City Community Band Holiday Concert 2pm. Bring the family to enjoy a holiday concert by members of the Iowa City Community Band and Iowa City New Horizons Band. This event is free and open to the public and is taking place at the Englert.
